[Anime] / [Live Action] Nodame Cantabile (のだめカンタービレ)

Image sources: http://www.eversky.org/?p=262 & the ost cd
Summary (taken from wiki):

Megumi Noda, or “Nodame” is a piano student at Momogaoka College of Music. An extremely talented pianist who wants to be a kindergarten teacher, she prefers playing by ear rather than reading the music score. She is messy and disorganized, takes baths several days apart and loves to eat, sometimes stealing her friend’s lunchbox when it is filled with delicacies.
Shinichi Chiaki, is Momogaoka’s top student. Born into a musical family, he is talented in piano and violin and has secret ambitions to become a conductor. An arrogant multi-lingual perfectionist who once lived abroad in the music capitals of the world as a young boy (namely Prague), he is trapped in Japan because in his childhood, he was in both boat and airplane accidents, and is now terrified of planes and boats.
They meet by accident. Nodame quickly falls in love, but it takes much longer for Chiaki to even begin to appreciate Nodame’s unusual qualities. Their relationship causes them both to develop and grow. Along the way, they meet some crazy people (like Masumi, Mine, and Stresemann) and make lasting friendships. Because of Nodame, Chiaki got the opportunity to lead a student orchestra and begins to have a broader appreciation of people's musical abilities. Because of Chiaki, Nodame faces her fears and enters a piano competition. Opportunities open up as both begin taking risks, stretching themselves far more than they ever thought possible.
If you're looking for the boy-meets-girl-they-fall-in-love kind of story, then you're watching the wrong show. Nodame Cantabile is very far from being typical. The character whose name is the source of the series' title actually shares the limelight with the male protagonist. Nodame is very different from the cool, always-composed, beautiful girls of other shows (she is actually quite a pervert); while Chiaki, although could be comparable to angsty, cool type of male character found in other shows, feels very human - he has phobias, smokes, and is short-tempered. It is this quality of the series that drew me in, aside from the fact that the OST is good (classical music + wonderful opening and ending songs, in the anime). Nodame Cantabile is very funny, never boring, and not quite predictable. Each character has its own quirks and depth, the storyline is well-thought of, and was directed wonderfully.
Definitely a must-watch!

[Anime] Air Gear (エア・ギア)

Summary (taken from the Anime News Network site):

Minami “Ikki” Itsuki, is a student and a delinquent. Also known as the “Unbeatable Babyface,” Ikki is the leader of the youth gang by the name of East Side Gunz. Upon his return home after being humiliated by a street gang of "Storm Riders" called the Skull Saders, Ikki discovers a secret hidden from him by his benefactors, the Noyamano sisters. The sisters belong to a group of Storm Riders who go by the team name of Sleeping Forest. Keen on helping Ikki to regain his confidence and pride, they supply him with a pair of Air Trecks (abbreviated as AT). Ikki eventually settles his grudge with the Skull Saders, but in the process he receives more than the simple satisfaction of revenge. Determined to experience the sensation of “flight” for as long as he can, our headstrong protagonist is quickly sucked into the mysterious, yet irresistible world of Air Treck.

This series is never one for a relaxed moment. It has everything you look for in a show: comedy, action, angst drama, bad-guys-turned-good and vice versa, a lot of fan-service, and the list goes on. The main character is your typical protagonist - a blend of arrogance with that untapped skill to match his confidence, and is backed by a group of very unique teammates (oh, you should definitely see his friends: one who skates on his head, another with a weird starting pose, one with a multiple-personality who claims to be in love with him and is a guy, a very large guy who is comparable to a tank when he skates, and of course, his childhood girl-friend who masks her identity by donning a ridiculous costume).

This is basically for those who enjoy flying, skating and well-endowed female characters. It is a very light and cracktastic anime, but not shallow at all. Unfortunately licensed, but if there's a will...:D

[Anime] Persona -Trinity Soul- (ペルソナ トリニティ・ソウル)

Summary:

This show is based on the RPG, 'Persona', and is in fact, the sequel to the PS2 game Persona 3. It takes place 10 years after Persona 3. Set in Ayanagi City, its police force begins to investigate several cases involving a mysterious illness called the Apathy Syndrome.

In the midst of the crisis, two brothers named Shin and Jun Kanzato move back to Ayanagi to see their elder brother Ryō, who is now the Superintendent of the Ayanagi City Police. It had been 10 years since the three siblings had last met with each other. At that time, a series of strange incidents had been occurring, like an entire crew disappearing from a submarine found in the middle of an ocean, or the case involving corpses that have been "Reversed". Immediately, Shin becomes involved in the cases and awakens his "Persona".

As of this day, only the first 6 episodes have been subbed. It has really good graphics, and a budding story line - every episode provides new discoveries. Speaking from experience, I think that to watch this series, you needn't have played the game before. For those who are hard-core action fans, they might find the series a bit slow, but I think the fighting scenes so far have provided enough evidence that should they start picking up the pace, it would be one heck of a show.

Psych Pilot Episode Season 1

Air Date: July 7, 2006

Summary:

Always moving from one fun thing to another, Shawn Spencer was never able to hold on to a job for more than 6 months. But he does have uncanny abilities in observation and possesses what seems to be a photographic memory. These abilities enable Shawn to solve crimes.

He had a habit of calling in tips to the police regarding cases he has read on the newspaper or seen on TV. One day when was going to claim his reward for another solved crime, Detective Lassiter wanted to arrest him on the grounds that the information Shaw provided was too good. It was too good to a point that the only way a person can have that kind of information is if he is an accomplice of the criminal. But with the help of his quick thinking, he was able to talk his way out of his predicament by claiming that he is psychic and proves it with the help of his observation skills. Because his alibi checked out and the police had no way of disproving it, they had no chance but to let him go.

As Shawn was on his way out the Interim Chief Vick stopped him. She asked Shawn to help them solve a kidnapping case. The investigation hit a wall and the chief thought that a miracle may pull through in the form of a psychic.

This however for Shawn is an indication that he has just found his new career. He immediately goes to his friend Gus, a pharmaceutical representative, and drags him to join the adventure. Gus was reluctant but at the same interested so he gave it a shot.

The pilot episode then continues with Shawn and Gus investigating the kidnapping of Camden McCallum, Jr. the sole heir to the textile fortune of the McCullum.

Quotable Quote:

Psych TV Series

Psych

James Roday stars as Shawn Spencer in the quick-witted drama Psych. Shawn is a police consultant who uses his keen sense of observation to solve crimes. Because of this uncanny ability, he even passed himself up as a psychic.

Along with James Roday is Dule Hill who plays as Gus, Shawn's best friend and "sidekick". Corbin Bernsen also stars as Shawn's father Henry, an ex-policeman and is the one responsible for developing Shawn's observation skills.

Psych is one of those shows that mix crime together with comedy. And just like those other shows, it features an oddball lead character – in this case Shawn Spencer a psychic who absolutely has no psychic abilities.

Shawn Spencer grew up in Santa Barbara and was raised by his father who happened to be a policeman. It was also his father who honed Shawn's skills in observing even the smallest of details in his environment. There came a point in time when the father and son developed a rift in their relationship. Shawn went from one job to another instead of becoming the police he was trained to be.

But Shawn, even in his current situation, never lost his abilities. In fact, he would call the police once in a while to give tips about cases he has seen on television or read on newspapers. One day, the police observed that Shawn's tips came way too close to the truth. They thought that he was an accomplice of the criminal and arrested him.

Being a quick thinker, Shawn convinces the police that he was in reality a psychic. Even though his explanations were a bit skeptical, the police hire him to aid in solving cases especially the tough ones. With his ever reluctant best friend Gus, Shawn is able to display his skills and prowess in observation as well as his charisma. He then opens a PI agency named Psych with the police force as its main source of revenue.

Hope you enjoy this TV series as much as I did. As of today, Psych is going to be airing its finale for Season 2.

Jumper (Part 2)

It was the first day of screening for the movie Jumper and I never thought there would be a lot of people watching it given that today is a weekday. Well, I guess they, just like me, were eagerly anticipating for this movie.

The movie revolves around a boy named Davy Rice (Hayden Christensen). Abandoned by his mother when he was 5 years old, he grew up in the hands of a what seemed to be a "no good" father. At school, he had this crush on a girl named Millie (Rachel Bilson) who was one of the popular girls in school (who later in the movie becomes his love interest). One day after class, because of an accident, Davy became aware of his abilities. Growing tired of his current situation, he decided to leave town and make his way to the world. And this, ladies and gentlemen, is where the story begins.

While watching the movie, all I could think about was "Wow! I wish I could do that!" Imagine having the ability to teleport (or "jump" as they call it) anywhere you want to go - Paris, Rome, Japan, China. I bet they can even jump to outer space if they wanted to... provided that they have the equipment and stuff needed for outer space... Anyway, just imagine the things you could possibly do with that kind of ability.

The special effects used in the movie were just simply awesome. But story wise, I wish they could have done better. I'm not really sure why but I seem dissatisfied with the story. I think the story was cramped and compressed so much that it left me with a lot of unanswered questions. Well, hopefully they will be answered when a sequel comes out.

And oh! Before I forget, a little bit of warning to those who have read the book Jumper by Steven Gould. The movie is nowhere near the story from the book even if you have read its sequel Reflex. Sure some of character names and some of the events are the same, but the plot of the movie is just way, way off from that of the book. There is however another book by Steven Gould entitled Jumper: Griffin's Story . It is about another jumper named Griffin whose character is present in the movie but not in the books Jumper and Reflex. This could be one of those attempts to bridge the film and the books.

The Big Screens

Welcome to The Big Screens... actually I was supposed to name this blog site as "The Big Screen" without the "s" at the end. Unfortunately that name was already taken. Well anyway, this blog site is basically about movies, TV shows, and some animes that I watch/ed (or you also watch/ed). I'll be posting some comments about them (especially for the movies). About the TV shows and animes on the other hand, I'll probably be uploading streaming videos for them to provide you, the readers, access to the latest episodes.

Well, that's it for the mean time. Once again, welcome to The Big Screens and I hope you enjoy your stay.
